How to Have Multi-Generational Living Conversations
So often, when families are considering Multi-Generational Living, they spend most of their time and energy focusing on the house itself- the number of bedrooms, the layout, the kitchen- without first considering the agreements, expectations, and even the boundaries that can make or break the experience of living together.
In Part 1 of my 2-part series on Multi-Gen Family Conversations on the Home After 50 Podcast, I walk you through the key categories from my upcoming Multi-Generational Family Checklist:
✨ Legal + Ownership Structure –- How the property will be owned, what happens if someone wants to sell, exit strategies, and protecting inheritance rights.
✨ Home Features + Layout - The wants and needs around privacy, kitchens (the #1 hotspot of conflict!), entrances, parking, accessibility, and storage.
✨ Buying Process Logistics - Must-haves vs. nice-to-haves, aligning timelines, budgeting for down payments, and clarifying who covers what costs.
✨ Family Living Agreements - From groceries and chores to guests, noise, caregiving, and privacy expectations- these conversations can save a lot of conflict later.
These are the exact topics I bring up in real client meetings, and most families are surprised by how much there is to consider beyond just finding the right property.
If you haven’t yet listened, I encourage you to tune in today and maybe even share the episode with your family members as a way to spark your own conversations. And, even if you don't live in a Multi-Gen Home and aren't planning too, a lot of this applies to anyone sharing living space.
